How to Make Slime
Slime is always popular with the kids and the reason why is simple — it's lots of fun! It is much cheaper to make at home, and easy to do. Here are three different exciting ways to make different kinds of slime.Ingredients
Basic Slime
- ½ cup of craft glue
- ½ cup of water(warm)
- Food coloring (optional)
- 1 tablespoon borax powder
- ¾ cup cornstarch
- 2 cups vegetable oil
- A piece of styrofoam
- 1 can (14 oz.) of sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 10-15 drops of food coloring
- 1 cup soap flakes
- 4 cups hot water
- Food coloring (optional)
Method 1
Basic Slime
-
1Mix one tablespoon of borax powder with one cup of warm water. Make the mixture in a quart (950 ml) jar. Continue to stir it until the borax is completely dissolved.
-
2Take a second jar. In this jar, mix together ½ a cup (4 oz.) of glue and ½ a cup (4 oz.) of water. This should produce a watery, cohesive solution.
-
3Add food coloring to the watery glue mixture. Choose any color.
- You can also separate the glue mixture evenly into smaller jars and make each one a different color.
-
4In a large jar, mix the borax solution into the watery craft glue solution, and watch the slime form.
- If you chose to make smaller amounts of slime in separate containers, evenly divide the borax solution among the containers.
-
5Let it sit for 30 seconds. The 30 seconds will give the slime time to solidify.
-
6Take it out and have fun!
Method 2
"Living” Slime
-
1Mix ¾ cup (175ml) of cornstarch with 2 cups (475ml) of vegetable oil. Mix it thoroughly in a tumbler or other glass.[1]

2Place the mixture-filled glass in the refrigerator. Leave it in the refrigerator until the mixture is chilled. This will help it to solidify.[2] -
3Remove the mixture from the refrigerator. Stir it well (the ingredients will have separated again). Let the mixture warm up just enough that it flows slightly.
-
4Find a block of styrofoam. It can really be any size but the standard size is 1 by 6 by 6 inches (25x150x150mm). Run the styrofoam on your hair (or really anything that will give it a charge- a rug, a dog, your child, etc.) The point is to build up a static charge.[3]
-
5Tip the container of slime so that the slime flows slowly out of it. (It should flow slowly.) Place the piece of styrofoam just in front of the slime. It should be about 1-inch away from the flow of slime. The slime should stop flowing and appear to take on a life of its own. Wiggle the styrofoam around and the slime should follow it. Your kids will be amazed (and you will be too!)[4]
Method 3
Edible Slime
-
1Pour a can of sweetened condensed milk into a pan. Add one tablespoon of cornstarch to the mixture and stir.[5]
-
2Bring the mixture to a low heat. Continue to stir constantly. If you don’t, the mixture may stick.[6]
-
3Remove the mixture from the heat when it has thickened. It should be more gelatinous and harder to stir.[7]
-
4Add 10 to 15 drops of food coloring to the mixture. You can choose any color. Allow the mixture to cool before you let your kids play with (and eat) it.[8]
- Make sure that the slime does not get on anything that stains easily or that you want to keep unstained. The food coloring in the slime may cause it to stain lighter colored things.[9]
Method 4
Soapflakes Slime
-
1Dissolve the soap flakes in water in a large bucket or bowl.
-
2Add color if desired.
-
3Let stand for up to 1 hour.
-
4Beat. The resulting play material will froth up when beaten. It pours easily and is extremely slimy to touch.
-
5Keep in an airtight container. This slime keeps very well, away from direct sunlight and heat.
